Joan Dolores Lyon, of Olympia, Washington, age 84, embraced her departure from this life on August 17, 2017, within the loving arms of her family who comforted her throughout her journey. Joan was born on March 25, 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Willard and Josephine Smith. She was the youngest of six children and spent her formative years in Manitoba.

Joan Dolores Lyon, of Olympia, Washington, age 84, embraced her departure from this life on August 17, 2017, within the loving arms of her family who comforted her throughout her journey. Joan was born on March 25, 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Willard and Josephine Smith. She was the youngest of six children and spent her formative years in Manitoba.
Joan was happily married to Michael Lyon from 1979 until her passing. Joan was a fountain of energy, raising her children while following her dream to become an educator. She earned her Bachelors' Degree and her teaching certificate from Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, Oregon and became a certified special education specialist, studying at the University of Oregon. Joan loved teaching and taught grades 6 - 12 as well as special education for over 30 years.
Along with her immense pride in her student's accomplishments, Joan had a passion for reading, gardening, cooking, travel and spending time with her family and friends. She possessed an unparalleled strength of spirit, raucous sense of humor and adored adventure.
She is survived by her husband Michael Lyon of Olympia, Washington, her son Brad Mix (and wife Susan) of Tacoma, Washington, her daughter Rachel Todd (and husband Jeff) of Culver City, California, her daughter Cynthia Lawlis (and husband Brett) of Tacoma, Washington and her grandchildren Paul Klinger of Tacoma, Washington, Shane Todd of Portland, Oregon, Zoe Mix of Tacoma, Washington and Maggie Todd of Culver City, California, niece Beverly Riopel and her family in Winnipeg, Manitoba, niece Claudia Smith of Corpu Christi, Texas and nephew Clifford Smith of Winnipeg, Manitoba as well as many cousins.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Mills & Mills Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Tumwater, Washington.
