Ted was born in Terrebone, OR on October 18, 1926, to Carl & Wilhelmina Surface. He and his family moved to Clinton (Whidbey Island) Washington when he was 4 years old, where he and his siblings grew up. He was the eldest of 6 boys. He worked as a deck hand on the ferries between Mukilteo & Clinton while in high school.

Following high school, he left the family home and moved to Redmond/Bend Oregon. It was there he met and married his wife, Velma Wickersham, and where their two children, Barbara & Ted, were born. They relocated to Aberdeen/ Hoquiam, Washington, in lieu of employment in 1952. Ted worked at Grays Harbor Plywood until it closed. He then worked as an appliance salesman at Harbor Hardware, Bayview Lumber, Stouffer Lumber & Moore Furniture. He was a proud life-time member of the Aberdeen Elks.

Ted and Velma moved to Lacey when Velma's health required that they live closer to family and her doctors.

Ted was an avid sports fisherman and spent hours fishing for Blueback in the rivers around Grays Harbor. After Velma's death (2002), he kept busy driving to Aberdeen to visit old friends, meeting with new friends for coffee at the Yelm Highway McDonalds, stopping in at Barbara's each morning and checking in on grandkids, reading, and watching Retro TV. His cats were his constant companions during this time. The last four years of his life were spent at Ravancho Adult Family Home, where he received excellent care and was thoroughly loved on.

He passed away November 13, 2017, from congestive heart failure following a series of health issues. A memorial service will be held later in the spring.

Three brothers predeceased him (Melvin, Bob, and Jess Surface).
He is survived by two brothers, Don and Carl Jr (Donna) Surface and his children Barbara (Tom) Salmon of Lacey, WA and Ted (Sue) Surface (Jr) of Lehigh Acres, FL; Five grandchildren: Tara (Sean) Harper; Tad (Darlene) Moenke; Norm (Ramee) Salmon; Angela (Todd) Woelk); Molly (Jason) Crabbe - six great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
